Mr. Patrick Dougherty came to the Republic of Turkey in August of 2009 and in October 2009 he founded the sport of lacrosse in the country.
Mr. Dougherty spent the next 6 years growing the game of lacrosse which now has 3 teams located in Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir. Through his initiative Turkey has participated in the 2014 FIL World Field Lacrosse Championships placing 22nd and 2015 FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championships placing 10th. He also founded and organized the Turkey Lacrosse Open, an international lacrosse tournament for both men and women in the country.
Turkey has established its own national championship under his guidance and Turkish teams have participated in other international tournaments and friendlies throughout Europe, Middle East and USA.
Because of Mr. Dougherty, Turkey is a full member of the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) and European Lacrosse Federation (ELF). Turkey is the first country of its kind to play the sport of lacrosse (field and Indoor) and be members of both the FIL and ELF. Turkey is also the first nation of its kind to play in both the World Field and World Indoor Lacrosse Championships.
He has positively touched the lives of many young Turkish athletes over the years as some are currently playing lacrosse in universities throughout Europe and USA.
